SKI TOURING IN SUUSAMYR VALLEY

Dear Friends!
We invite you to visit a unique place for backcountry skiing – the alpine Suusamyr valley. Deep snow and variety of mountain slopes suitable for skiing makes this place very attractive for ski touring and backcountry trekking. Accompanied by experienced guides you will walk along itineraries prepared specifically for this purpose. You will reach mountain passes, climb peaks from where you can observe the picturesque Suusamyr valley and endless mountain peaks and on the top of that you will ski down the virgin slopes.

After skiing you can relax in comfortable and warm cottages at the ski base. Cottages are equipped with rooms for keeping ski equipment and clothes drying. In the café at the ski base you can enjoy various meals of European and national cuisine. Sauna would be a perfect addition to the tour program and will help you retrieve power.

Program duration is eight days.
Season – December-March.
Price of the tour per a person – 1000 Euro.
Groups may consist of 2 and more persons (maximum 10 persons). One or two guides accompany a group.

Region description
Suusamyr is an alpine valley to the South-West from Bishkek and only 160 km from the Capital of Kyrgyzstan. The valley is situated on the altitude of 2100-2500 m above the sea level. It stretches from West to East for more than 100 km. Its maximum width is 40 km. It is surrounded by high mountains with peaks up to 4500 meters – Kyrgyz Ala Too in the North, Suusamyr Too in the South-West and Djumgal Too in the South-East.
High precipitation in this area is defined by the geographical characteristics. Depth of snow cover in winter period is about 1.5-2 meters that remains on the surface for 100-120 days during a year. Slopes in the valley have various gradient and exposure that allows to select the most attractive and safe tracks for skiing during the entire ski season (December-March).

Tour program
Attention: Guides reserve the right to choose slopes for ski tour depending on snow conditions and avalanche hazard.

Day one – arrival, accommodation, introduction with guides.
Meeting at the Manas airport – 30 km from Bishkek city. Trip to ski base in Too Ashuu on a comfortable four wheel Van takes about 3 hours (150 km). Lunch is in café during a stop on the way to the base. Accommodation in cottages. Skiing down the track. Introduction with guides, inspection of the situation on the snow fields and a brief information on anti-avalanche safety.

Day two – day seven
Ski tour trekking. Estimated schedule:
8.30 – Breakfast.
9.30 – Trip to the starting point in a Van or by feet to the routes that start at the ski base. Ski rounds. Instructions on the avalanche safety. Return to the base.
19.00 – Dinner. Review of the climbing and skiing. Free time.

One day-off is scheduled for the tour. During day-off any participant can ski down the ski base track. By the group decision the day-off can be replaced with a ski tour round.

Day eight – Final
8.30 – Breakfast.
Packing up.
11.00 – Departure to Manas airport, Bishkek city.

Meals
During all program there will be tree meals daily. Breakfasts will be taken in café. Menu consists of national and European cuisine. Lunches will be packed in rucksacks and carried to the field (fruits, sandwiches, hot tea).

Transport
All trips and transportations during the program will be carried out on a comfortable, all-wheel-drive vehicle in a perfect technical condition, equipped with winter tires and large roof top carrier.

Necessary equipment
Skies are equipped with ski tour bindings and ski climbers. For snowboarder it is either split boards or snowshoes. Ski sticks. Helmets. The following avalanche equipment is required for skiing: transceiver (beeper), rod, shovel. Rucksack with clamps for skies or snowboards and warm, comfortable clothes for skiing and long walks in mountains. In winter there could be temperature drop from 5 up to 15 degrees below Celsius. Sunglasses, ski mask, sun-protection cream. Equipment could be rented by arrival in advance. Number of sets and equipment is limited.

Currency, ATMs
National currency of Kyrgyzstan is Kyrgyz Som (KGS). Currency could be exchanged in the banks and currency exchange offices. It is necessary to take into account that only note of major nominal such as 100 and 50 (Euro and US dollar) and Russian rubles greater than 100 rubles could be accepted and exchanged with a regular exchange rate. Bills of a lower nominal value are accepted reluctantly. Also, it is problematic to exchange bills with small defects, prints or impurities.
ATMs are available in Manas airport.
Cellular communication

On the territory of Kyrgyzstan there are several mobile operators providing roaming for either Russian or foreign mobile companies. The largest are Beeline and Megacom. However, it is much easier to buy sim-cards of these operators with activated international tariff plans.

About skiing
Program is intended for skiers who are skilled in backcountry. Ski area is vast – slopes gradient varies from 20 to 35 degrees. Elevation changes reach 1000 meters. There are three tracks with various profiles.

• Ascents and ski rounds in Too Shuu area. The altitude is 3000-3650 meters. Slope gradient is 20-35 degrees. Rout mileage is from 3 to 10 km.
• Ascents and ski rounds in Otmok pass area. The altitude is 3000-3450 meters. Long smooth slopes with gradient of 20-35 degrees. Rout mileage is from 2 to 5 km. Availability to do several ski rounds a day on various slopes.
• Routes that starts at the bottom of the valley. Long mileage routs that combine ascents and descents. Altitude is 2300-3200 metres.

Ascent types and number of ski rounds are chosen by the guides on the basis of group skills in skiing and preferences of participants. Trail levels of complexity are different; we can offer advanced level to experienced free riders or easy level for those who have basic experience in backcountry.

During the program it is planned to organize one day hiking (ski tour) and tracking in mountains, this means that it is necessary to contribute time for physical training and drill.
It is necessary to remember that skiing in backcountry is extreme and potentially dangerous type of sport. Nonobservance of technical safety rules and instructions of the guide may lead to injuries.

Tour program fee includes:

• Meeting at the airport – transfer to airport
• All transfers within the program
• Accommodation at the ski base (not more than 7 nights!) in the cottages for 4 people
• Three time meal during entire program (including dinner during trip Bishkek-Suusamyr-Bishkek)
• Payment for ski-pass to the ski base Too Ashuu (one for full day of skiing and one for half day in first day of the program)
• Guide fee (for a group up to 3 people – one guide; for a group of 4 people and more – two guides)
• Rent of radio stations
• Fee for sauna at the ski base (one visit)
• Payment for all ecological fees.

Cost of the program does not include:

• Air tickets to Bishkek
• Medical (Sport) insurance
• Rent of ski and anti-avalanche equipment
• Accommodation in Bishkek before the program start and after its end
• Alcohol drinks
